Not many people know or realize when is Mothers Day coming until someone tells them. Actually this day is something we should never forget besides other important days such as moms and dads birthday. It is a day where every child expresses how much he or she loves their mother, and how much they appreciate their mothers hard work all this while in bringing them up. If we were to look at why this day was very important when it was first announced as a public event, we can see that the reason was the ignorance of many people in not recognizing their mothers toil. And this ignorance had raised importance in certain groups of people, which announced the celebration of such an event.

History behind the Day

The earliest celebrations were reported to be during the Greek empire, where they had spring celebrations in the honor of Rea, or the mother of the Gods. Several thousand years later, in the 17th century, this occasion was celebrated commercially in England as Mothering Sunday. It was basically celebrated to honor the mothers of England. Sons who work very far from homes would be allowed and encouraged to go back home to celebrate this day with their mothers. Eventually this event became something so common, that whenever you ask someone when is Mothers Day they could tell almost instantly.

In United States, mothers day was first celebrated in the late 19th and early 20th century. In 1907 Ana Jarvis from Philadelphia began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. She persuaded her mother's church in West Virginia to celebrate Mother's Day on the second anniversary of her mother's death, the 2nd Sunday of May. Eventually she publicly requested everyone to celebrate and establish a national level mothers day. And to this, in 1914, the president made the official announcement proclaiming Mother's Day on the 2nd Sunday of May. So if you were asked when is Mothers Day? you should be able to answer by now.

This day was observed as national mothers day in many other countries worldwide, and in fact they have commercialized the whole occasion so that everyone knows it by heart.
