The earliest celebrations were reported to be during the Greek empire, where they had spring celebrations in the honor of Rea, or the mother of the Gods. Several thousand years later, in the 17th century, this occasion was celebrated commercially in England as Mothering Sunday. It was basically celebrated to honor the mothers of England. Sons who work very far from homes would be allowed and encouraged to go back home to celebrate this day with their mothers. In United States, mothers day was first celebrated in the late 19th and early 20th century. In 1907 Ana Jarvis from Philadelphia began a campaign to establish a national Mother's Day. Eventually she publicly requested everyone to celebrate and establish a national level mothers day.
