Ever wonder how Mothers Day UK was celebrated? Americans are not the only country who love their mothers and celebrate them with a holiday. England also celebrates what is known as Mothers Day UK or Mothering Sunday. Usually, Mothers Day in the UK is held on the last weekend of March. In America, Mothers Day is the first weekend in May. This year, the year of 2007, Mothers Day UK will be held March 26. Just like in America, Mothers Day UK is celebrated by giving ones mother a card or gift or even spending the day with her.

History

Mothers Day UK began when working daughters were allowed one day to go back home to visit their mothers. It was also said that is started when important people returned home to visit their mother church once a year. People back in the day had trouble going to church once a week because they were so busy with work. They were also busy with travel. Mothering Sunday was basically the idea of returning to your faith as well as your family. Since many people had not seen their families in a long time, they brought back many gifts and baked goods with them. Since it was basically a holiday of homecoming, it is easy to see where Mothers Day UK got its sweetness from.

During this time, Mothering Sunday became a day where one could return to those that mothered them, whether that was a person or a church. It was not until 1872 that Mothers Day and Mothers Day UK was sought out to be recognized. However, when Julia Ward Howe suggested the idea, she wanted it to be a day of peace between America and Americas mother, Britain. In 1907, a woman by the name of Miss Anna pushed for Mothers Day to be a national holiday, after the anniversary of her own mothers death.

Mothers Day UK is not much different from the American version of Mothers Day. It has a different name and a different date, but the principle is the same today. Mothers Day UK and Mothering Sunday are to thank for the start of this holiday, even if it started out as a religious one. You can even treat your own mother to a special treat of celebrating both days. If you are American and would like to celebrate Mothers Day UK, all you would have to do is celebrate it a week early, drink some tea, and call your mother mum.
